SubLay C is protective soil for the life of buried concrete: Form 1 replaces ordinary backfill in the envelope around buried infrastructure without changing the mix design (energy, transport, agriculture, municipal, and industrial assets). Buried reinforced concrete fails when chloride and sulfate ions reach the rebar, often through the same soil packed against the structure. On Finland's coast, disturbed acid sulfate soils add another aggressive exposure, alongside de-icing salt and freeze-thaw on roads and bridges.

These notes are engineering proposals for assessing a protective-bedding concept. Tables are review aids, not test results or approved construction details. Citations do not imply institutional partnership or product approval.

Articles in this series

  1. Chlorides and carbonation create different corrosion risks: ion pathways through soil and moisture versus in-concrete fixes.
  2. Acid sulfate soils make site investigation essential in Finland: mapped coastal ground risk and site evidence before a pilot.
  3. Qualifying recycled mineral inputs for protective bedding: side streams when regulation allows, with controlled qualification.
  4. Building a credible durability test programme: staged lab work and how it maps to our public validation labels.
  5. A useful pilot connects performance with the owner decision: evidence objectives, cost comparison, and the owner's next step.
